Melee Diamonds
Melee diamonds are a critical part of the industry, and are typically purchased by wholesale diamond vendors, jewelers, and jewelry designers. These smaller size diamonds can be used for halo settings around larger center stones, pave jewelry and in other common jewelry styles, whereas larger melee stones are often used to make tennis bracelets, wedding bands and other fine jewelry.
Melee diamonds can be cut into round brilliant cut diamonds, which is the standard cutting style for larger stones and features 57 or 58 facets and offers an excellent balance of brilliance and fire. It can also be fashioned into single-cut diamonds – which are still round, but only feature 17 or 18 facets.
How is Melee Priced:
Melee diamonds are small, so they are not very valuable individually. However, they are still priced according to the 4Cs
1
Cut
Diamond-Cut pertains to diamond shape, the most popular is round, though heart, pear, oval, and other common shapes may attract certain people more so than the classic round shape.
2
Color
Color, ironically enough, is defined as the diamond’s absence of color. Diamond Color is graded on a scale from D-Z, where D is colorless (white), and Z is a nearly yellow color.
3
Clarity
Clarity is graded on a scale from “IF” (internally flawless) to “I” (imperfect). These grades pertain to the amount/size of inclusions inside a diamond. Inclusions are identified and plotted using a 10x magnification jeweler’s loupe, and only stones graded “I1” or below have eye-visible inclusions.
4
Carat
Carat is the unit of diamond weight. The larger a diamond, the more expensive the price: for example, a 2-carat stone is typically more valuable than two 1-carat stones of the same quality. The same is true for bigger stones as well.
The price of melee diamonds is calculated by the total carat weight of the parcel, rather than for each individual stone. For example: a parcel of melee diamonds may be priced at $500 per carat- though a parcel of 0.01 carat melee diamonds would contain 10 times more diamonds than a similar parcel of 0.10 carat melee diamonds.
